SPORT© (Substance Prevention Optimizing Resiliency Training) Prevention Plus Wellness™ (SPORT PPW) is a brief, interactive school- or community-based positive youth development and health promotion program that is designed to prevent substance use and misuse and encourage behaviors that promote health and well-being.
Results from a 12-month follow-up in a randomized controlled trial demonstrated that participants experienced improvements in a number of target behaviors including alcohol use, risk and protective factors, cigarette use frequency, and cigarette initiation.
The SPORT PPW program can be administered in a group or one-on-one. Participants begin by completing a self-administered health and fitness behavior screening survey that assesses behaviors in the areas of sport and physical activity, exercise, physical activity norms, breakfast and nutrition, sleep and rest, and alcohol initiation and use. A personalized goal plan is derived from results of the survey and delivered in a one-on-one consultation with participants. This plan is designed to enhance participant motivation and foster behavior change in the following areas:
A one-page flyer is mailed to participants one week after the fitness consultation and reinforces prevention messages delivered during the consultation. Participants are expected to avoid the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illegal drugs. Program components can be modified to accommodate the needs of the individual.
The program can be used as a stand-alone intervention or added to another prevention program and is available in three versions for: 1) elementary school youth ages 8-10, 2) middle school youth ages 10-14, and 3) high school youth ages 14-18.
SPORT PPW was developed in 2002 and has been used by more than 2,500 participants in 10 different sites in the United States.
Fitness consultations are delivered by trained fitness specialists (e.g., nurses, certified health specialists). An online self-paced training is available for $249. A live online workshop is available for $1,999. An onsite workshop is available for $4,000. Please use details in the Contact section for more information.
Considerations for implementing this program include acquiring school administration, teacher, and student buy-in; recruiting facilitators and ensuring they complete training; making time to implement the program in a scheduled classroom curriculum; and finding a private location to hold fitness consultations.
The Clearinghouse can help address these considerations. Please call 1-877-382-9185 or email Clearinghouse@psu.edu

SPORT PPW is implemented in one 45-minute session during the school day.
The elementary, middle school, and high school program kits can be purchased in English or Spanish and they cost $599 each.
To move SPORT PPW to the Effective category on the Clearinghouse Continuum of Evidence, at least one external evaluation should be performed that demonstrates sustained, positive outcomes lasting at least two years from the beginning of the program or at least one year from program completion. This evaluation must be conducted independently of the program developer.
