This program is for adults who are addicted to drugs.
Living in Balance, a community-based treatment program, is designed to help adults overcome substance addiction and prevent potential relapses.

The Living in Balance program incorporates elements of cognitive behavioral, experiential, and Twelve Step approaches to help participants achieve and maintain a life free from substance use. The program may be implemented as a stand-alone intervention or as a supplement to existing substance abuse treatments. It may also be delivered to individuals or groups, and the number of sessions can be modified to meet the needs of each client. Individual sessions can be implemented in any sequence and repeated as necessary. The program includes the following components:
Living in Balance is suitable for use with all types of care including inpatient, extensive outpatient, hospital, evening or weekend programs, or continuing care.
The Living in Balance program has been implemented throughout the United States and Canada.
This program is facilitated by therapists in a variety of settings. Optional 2-day virtual training is available through Hazelden Publishing. Considerations for implementing this program include recruiting therapists and offering them training, acquiring buy-in and commitment from participants, finding a suitable location to hold sessions, and ensuring the program is delivered with fidelity.

Living in Balance consists of 12 core sessions, plus 35 additional sessions, that are 60 to 75 minutes each.

To move the Living in Balance program to the Promising category on the Clearinghouse Continuum of Evidence, at least one evaluation should be performed demonstrating positive effects lasting at least one year from the beginning of the program or at least six months from program completion.
